Year One - Demo EP + See You Again [2008]

By request, the Year One demo is now available below, as is their cover of Miley Cyrus' "See You Again." I highly recommend both, and I wouldn't be surprised if you saw the band on the next M=B Covers mix.

For those of you that missed the unsigned showcase on the band, it is a side-project of Josh Gilbert (bass/vocals for As I Lay Dying) and former Maylene & The Sons of Disaster drummer Lee Turner.

EP: YEAR ONE - DEMO EP
SONG: YEAR ONE - SEE YOU AGAIN

Remember to add the band on their MySpace and pick up their merch!
PS. apparently Miley Cyrus likes the band's cover. Check the video below (I suggest skipping to 2:20, where the music starts, unless you like teenage girls screaming.)

Four Year Strong - Absolutely (Story of A Girl)

Four Year Strong will be releasing Explain It All, a cover album, on July 21. Here is the first song off that album, a cover of Nine Day's "Absolutely (Story of A Girl)." I'm still undecided on it; I was a big fan of the vocals on the original, and FYS just can't sing it as well. In typical FYS-fashion though, the music is extremely solid with some added complexity that makes the song their own. Overall, "Absolutely" is just too damn catchy of a song not to be fun.

SONG: FOUR YEAR STRONG - ABSOLUTELY (STORY OF A GIRL)

Here's the tracklist for the album. So many of my favorite 90's songs are here that I virtually have no choice but to pick this up.
1) So Much for the Afterglow
2) Absolutely (Story of a Girl)
3) Ironic
4) Bullet with Butterfly Wings
5) Semi-Charmed Life
6) Spiderwebs
7) Roll to Me
8) Fly
9) In Bloom
10) She Really Loved You
11) She's So High

Haste The Day - Long Way Down

So this cover isn't even remotely new (from 2005's When Everything Fails), but it came up when listening to my Zune on random, so I figured I'd throw it up. Here is Haste The Day covering The Goo Goo Dolls' "Long Way Down." Even my Dad likes this cover.

Rise Against - For What It's Worth

*RE-POST FROM TWO DAYS AGO. LINK NOW FIXED. MY BAD. -JackJuice*

Tim McIlrath turns it down for a few minutes here to sing a stripped-down version of Buffalo Spingfield's "For What It's Worth" for AOL Sessions Undercover. It wouldn't be Rise Against if they weren't protesting something. The song remains fairly true to the original, which I love, so give this a listen.

SONG: RISE AGAINST - FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH

Sky Eats Airplane - Nookie

This totally reminds me of elementary/middle school. I think Nookie is the best song Sky Eats Airplane could've picked to cover. Instead of completely hardcore-ifying it like all these covers we've been seeing this year, they keep the song's same personality while adding a little SEA twist to it. Definitely one of the better covers this year.

Confide - Such Great Heights

The fad of cover songs just keeps chugging along. Confide hops on board with this cover of The Postal Service's Such Great Heights. One of the better cover songs I've heard in a while. They made it their own while still keeping the feel of the original. Check it out.

Ace Enders & A Million Different People - Bittersweet Symphony

Ace Enders must have sent out thousands of texts to make this happen. This cover of The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony" has more guest vocals than the entire last Say Anything album. Singers include:
Mark Hoppus - blink-182
Craig Owens - Chiodos/Cinematic Sunrise
Matt Thiessen - Relient K
Kenny Vasoli - The Starting Line/Person L
Alex Gaskarth - All Time Low
Duane Okun - Socratic
Bryce Avery - The Rocket Summer
Ace Enders- Ace Enders/The Early November
Maybe you'll be able to pick out the voices better than me, because all I can hear is Ace and Craig. If you enjoy the song, go buy it for a dollar on iTunes. All proceeds go to the VH1 Save The Music Foundation.

National Product - Disarm

It's a good day to post this. A beautiful rendition of Smashing Pumpkins' "Disarm" by none other than National Product. It's always nice when your band has great backing vocals; harmonies make NP different and special. Check it out.

Year One - See You Again

Horray for good cover songs. Though Breathe Carolina has a decent cover of Miley Cyrus' 'See You Again' on Punk Goes Pop 2, Year One has them beat.

For those who don't know the band, Year One is the side-project of As I Lay Dying bass player/clean singer Josh Gilbert and former-Maylene & The Sons of Disaster drummer Lee Turner. More on the group itself in a later post.

This version of the song is far superior if you ask me. The YouTube video above is just the band's photo with audio, and you can hear it at their MySpace. Forgive me, I'll get this whole MediaFire thing figured out soon enough.

Of Mice And Men - Poker Face

Of Mice and Men is the new outfit for ex-Attack Attack front man Austin Carlile. Don't get why he is fronting an exact Attack Attack clone. Their first song 'Seven Thousand Miles For What' is indistinguishable from any AA! song. Oh well... here is their token cover song since everyone now a days has to have one now. I used to love this fad but I think it may be getting old? I mean this band has only put out one song and now they are doing a cover? I feel like you should have at least an album under your belt till you do one. Dunno. Its not that bad, never heard the original so I can't really compare.. Check them out if your an AA! fan.

Drop Dead, Gorgeous - Swing

Drop Dead, Gorgeous give us, yet another cover of Swing. Although not as good as the Miss May I version, seeing them preform this live was awesome. DDG is slated to put out an album this year so keep your ears alert.

Miss May I - Swing

The covers just keep rolling on in. This is one of my favorite up and coming bands. They are currently in the studio writing their first full length. Great cover. Check it.

Sea of Treachery - Misery Business

I love covers. Could have done more with this song, but was not a bad effort overall.

Attack Attack! - I Kissed A Girl

Attack Attack!'s cover of Katy Perry's I Kissed A Girl. On a different note these guys are actually really good live. Although when I saw them, the screamer had a voice mask on the entire time which made his screams sound like TV-fuzz, but I think that was a mistake...or at least I hope so.

August Burns Red - Hit Me Baby One More Time

Another cover! Although to be honest, this song has been done to death by metal bands; but August Burns Red does a fantastic job at it. It's exactly what you think it will be, the ABR version of Britney Spears' Hit Me Baby One More Time. This will be one of the songs on the upcoming CD, Punk Goes Pop II.

Never See Tomorrow - A Thousand Miles

I'm a sucker for cover songs, especially metal covers of non-metal songs. Never See Tomorrow, an Australian 5-Piece band, covers Vanessa Carlton's 'A Thousand Miles' a song that to be quite honest, I also enjoyed in its original form. Fantastic cover...really catchy. Check it out.

In Fear And Faith - Gangsters Paradise

In Fear and Faith have jumped onto the bandwagon of hardcore covers of rap/pop songs. Although it seems most bands are doing this, I actually enjoy it. I'm not a fan of rap/pop at all, but when bands like this cover them it adds a different element to the song, and most of the time they turn out quite enjoyable. Check out In Fear and Faith's full length, Your World On Fire, out now. Enjoy and let me know about your favorite cover songs!!!
