Emery - The Weak's End (2004)

Genre: Post-Hardcore / Screamo
Website: Myspace
For Fans Of: Dead Poetic, Saosin, Underoath

Usually I dislike this kind of music. Maybe I'm changing, maybe I'll wear an Underoath shirt (lmfao hell to the no hahahahahahahaha!). But really I never did like this genre of music (besides a couple older bands that I will mention in this review) before. Post-Hardcore isn't something that gives me a boner. Anyways I'm beginning to appreciate a lot of bands in this genre. Emery is a Christian post-hardcore band on tooth and nail (duh Christian label haha). Ya I know what most of you might be saying, that these guys are a run of the mill cookie cutter band. But they're not I can assure you. The music is so awesome. The vocals range from clean to screaming. One moment the clean vocals are bringing to mind Anberlin with a bit of Dashboard Confessional, and then the screams are as intense as any recent screamo album. But it's the music that's pulling me in. Sometimes I can hear a little Full Collapse era Thursday on "By All Accounts (Today Was A Disaster)" and a little Funeral For A Friend on "Bloodless". Sometimes the music even reminds me of Finch (check them out kiddies they're good). This album is a masterpiece and I'm still hearing new things with every listen.

Emery - ...In Shallow Seas We Sail [2009]

Um, wow? Why haven't I ever given Emery a chance til now? For some reason I always lumped them with the annoying teeny bopper bands, but... I suppose they shouldn't be. This album blew my mind completely out of my skull when I first listened to it. I had shit expectations and was completely proven wrong. It has the perfect blend of hardcore and melody; it's absolutely phenomenal. Not to mention the vocalist has a pretty sexy, silky smooth voice. :) To me, this is one of the best albums of the year so far.

Emery - Curbside Goodbye

Quite a few fans abandoned Emery after their 2007 release I'm Only A Man, not liking their change to more structured and accessible songwriting. Last year, the band started migrating back to what made them famous, incorporating more screams and power into them via their 2008 EP, While Broken Hearts Prevail. Here we have "Curbside Goodbye," the second song released from their upcoming album ...In Shallow Seas We Sail. The band has reached a happy medium between catchy hooks and their roots, as heard in the song. I have high hopes for the new album.

Check out the song, buy the album it releases June 2nd, and definitely check these guys out on their summer tour. As Matrocksteady previously reported, the other bands participating are killer. Full tour schedule can be found on his post.

PS. If you haven't seen the album artwork for ...In Shallow Seas We Sail or While Broken Hearts Prevail, I highly suggest you check them out here and here. Very cool stuff.
