Cave In - Planets of Old (2009)

Genre: Alternative/Metalcore
Website: Myspace
For Fans Of: Coalesce, Botch

Back in the late 90's Cave In were primarily a metalcore band, playing heavy hardcore influenced music that was really quite good. However at the turn of the century the band decided to follow a more alt. rock direction eschewing the crushing riffs for spacy atmospheric sounds and the like. Well with their new EP they've decided to take bits from both of these sounds and merging it together, in the process creating the heaviest damn song of their career. 'The Red Trail' sounds like something off an early Converge record, with high pitched shrieks and frenzied guitarwork and drumming, it's really quite intense stuff. There's pretty much everything you could possibly want on a Cave In record on this one short EP, a really quite impressive feat that definitely shows promise for anything they release in the future.
