Not to be confused with the full-length that was released shortly after this, this is instead a short 4 track EP that has these funny little amateurish intro bits that are totally experimental. Regardless of whether or not you like the glitchy little intro track the actual songs on here, to be perfectly blunt, fucking rule - particularly the epic 9 minute final track. It's a swirling, post-rocky piece of awesome that's kind of pretty but at the same time kind of crushing, I'm pretty sure if you have any interest in the post-rocky side of screamo then you'll know exactly what I mean. Sound interesting? No? Well then you suck. Check it.

Portraits of Past were (are?) a hardcore punk band from the likes of the San Franciso Bay Area. They were arguably one of the pioneers of the screamo sound, releasing 01010101 in 1995 which pretty much ruled face. It's really intense and noisy but at the same time also melodic and atmospheric, creating a really dark depressive mood. The band split sometime after that, going on to form bands such as the legendary Funeral Diner and ...Who Calls So Loud. Also, to my surprise, I found that they had recently reformed (sometime in 2008 apparently) and released a new EP this year - Cypress Dust Witch. Which naturally also rules face. Basically everything this band has touched or come into contact with is great. So yeah, check it out. And make sure to buy their stuff or something. Support the band. Love it.
