Neurosis - The Eye Of Every Storm (2004)

Genre: Post-Metal/Sludge/Progressive
Website: Myspace
For Fans Of: Minsk, Isis, Cult of Luna

Neurosis were probably the original post-metal band, influencing the majority of today's post-metal bands such as Isis and Pelican with the elongated build-ups and loud to soft dynamics that post-metal is known for. However the way they put it together and crafted their sound is what makes them so much better than their modern contemporaries. The Eye of Every Storm is, in fact, one of the band's softer albums, choosing to use ambience more often than sheer heaviness. Chances are you won't get into this on the first listen, it might seem too sombre or, well, simplistic I guess, what with all the ambient passages, but just give it a chance. It has lots of intricacies as well as depth and is generally just cool and relaxing to listen to, it's certainly not an aggressive album. Just stay away if you're looking for something fast or upbeat, you won't find it here.
